Dear guest

Dear guests,
We are pleased to welcome you to the Hotel Italia at the Great St Bernard Pass, the most celebrated Alpine pass in the history of the Alps. Over the centuries and millennia, Mountain has continually met History here at the pass. Among others, Julius Caesar, Constantine, Charlemagne and Napoleon have passed through here, as well as Stendhal and more recently John XXIII, still a young priest, and John Paul II. Ernest Hemingway stopped to sleep nearby, with the manuscript of “A Farewell to Arms” in his rucksack.
At the Hotel Italia, at 2474 metres above sea level, you will find attention, courtesy and competence in a familiar environment, in a unique setting, in a magical context where silence and the mountains help you to find yourself and disconnect from the daily routine, albeit for a short time.
We are at your disposal to make your stay and your trip to the pass a moment to remember. The American writer Truman Capote, one of the guests at our hotel, recalled this atmosphere in one of his most famous stories. You may be pleased to know that in addition to you, our guests have included Maresciallo Graziani, General Montgomery, Palmiro Togliatti, the Duke of Aosta, Liz Taylor and Richard Burton, Krizia and many other travellers, both famous and less well-known.
The hotel has a long history. Built in 1933 by Battista Brunod near the Plan de Jupiter archaeological site and the natural lake, on the Italian side, it has been offering its guests rest after mountain walks, moments of relaxation and unique Alpine scenery ever since. Over the decades, Hotel Italia has been run by three generations and is now entering its fourth. We are therefore very proud to be part of the tradition of the Alpine hotel families. At the bureau, on the first floor, we will be happy to give you all the information you need for trips to the mountains or to nearby Martigny and Aosta, cities of art and culture. Breakfast is served on the ground floor, in the room behind the bar, from 6a.m. to 12p.m. In the rooms on the ground floor you will find the hotel’s small library and some board games for quiet evenings by the fire in the stove. The hotel does not have – and does not wish to have – a television. We are sure that, if you have grasped the spirit that animates the Great St. Bernard Pass, you will understand the reason for this choice.

In our Bazaar you will find a varied and special offer.
The restaurant of the Hotel Italia, located on the first floor, offers typical Aosta Valley and Italian cuisine. The chef will be happy to offer you, if you wish, a special vegetarian meal.
Finally, we would like to remind you that smoking is not permitted in any part of the hotel. This will allow you to better appreciate the taste of our cuisine and to respect the boiseries of the Restaurant and the rooms.
Thank you for being here with us and for having had the courtesy to read us.
Enjoy your stay at the Hotel Italia at the Great St Bernard Pass.
